What the golden ratio is, and why composition matters

The golden ratio (φ ≈ 1.618) is a proportion that recurs across nature, architecture and painting — from a snail shell to Da Vinci’s drawings. The human eye reads it as naturally balanced, which is why compositions built on φ feel harmonious and "right" without us knowing why.

Composition decides where a viewer looks first, how long they linger and how the image makes them feel. Placing the main subject on a golden-ratio line or point — instead of dead centre — guides the eye smoothly through the frame and gives a photo depth.

This tool overlays the golden-ratio grid, the Fibonacci spiral, the rule of thirds and golden rectangles right on your photo. It computes a simple composition score and suggests how to make the shot stronger.

Golden ratio — frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the golden ratio and the rule of thirds?

The rule of thirds splits the frame into thirds (a 1:1:1 ratio) — it is a simplification. The golden ratio uses the proportion φ ≈ 1:0.618, so the lines sit closer to the centre. Thirds is a quick guide; the golden ratio tends to feel subtler and more natural.

Do I have to calculate composition while shooting?

No. You just train your eye. The more photos you analyse with this grid, the more you start to see golden-ratio points intuitively, right in the viewfinder.

How does the tool calculate the composition score?

It estimates the "focal weight" of the image — the area of highest contrast and brightness, where the eye lands first. Then it measures how close that sits to the nearest golden-ratio point. The closer, the higher the score. It is a guide, not a verdict — rules are made to be broken on purpose.

Do you store uploaded photos?

No. All analysis runs directly in your browser. No image is ever uploaded or saved on a server.

Can I use the result commercially?

Yes. The annotated image is yours. It carries a discreet "Made with Disegno" signature because the tool is free — thanks for the mention.
